Design of New Whitehorse Performing Arts Centre Unveiled

After 18 months of planning and extensive engagement with the community, we are delighted to unveil the final design of the new Whitehorse performing arts centre. The design brings to life Council’s vision for a contemporary, community-centred theatre, festival and function centre that is welcoming, flexible and accessible to all. The scalloped architecture, brick facades and extensive use of glass connect the building to the parkland. Inside is light-filled and spacious; outside offers inviting spaces to gather, relax and play.

The new centre will provide an expanded array of arts and cultural opportunities for the entire Whitehorse community to enjoy for decades to come.

  • 626-seat auditorium - large stage and modern backstage area 
  • 200-seat studio theatre 
  • multipurpose rehearsal/dance studio 
  • multipurpose function room 
  • improved soundshell for community festivals and other outdoor events
  • improved car parking for easy access to the performing arts centre, library, Council offices, parkland and the nearby Walker Park sports precinct.

A Place to Entertain – Your new home of performing arts

Performers, community groups, schools and theatre companies will love to entertain at the new centre. The main theatre will cater for large productions while keeping a feeling of intimacy and warmth. The seating is designed for comfort, access and excellent stage views. User groups will appreciate the easy access from the loading dock to stage, its technical fit out, and its large stage and wing space.

A Place to Celebrate – Your new home of festivals

The new larger soundshell opens up from the Studio Theatre, links easily to modern back-of-house facilities and looks out across the grassy amphitheatre. Improved access, sightlines and sound will provide a fantastic audience experience during outdoor events and festivals.

A Place to Connect – Your new home of functions and events

The large foyer enables easy access to the box office, bar and outdoors. A variety of seating options make it the perfect place to catch up before the show.

The flexible function space on level one can be configured for every type of event, from a business meeting to a special celebration.

A Place to Create – Your new home to learn and grow

The Studio Theatre with retractable seating is perfect for small scale productions, movie screenings, dance rehearsals and events. The level one rehearsal spaces are designed for dance and other activities with a dedicated access for students and parents.

Design Community Engagement

The final design of the new Whitehorse performing arts centre has been informed by extensive community engagement over the past 12 months with key clients, patrons, local residents, community groups, businesses, sports clubs, special interest groups and the wider community.
